We won't be surprised if you're thinking "what can be so special about another water based fire protection coating?" so given this chance we just couldn't wait to tell you about our new on-site intumescent coating that clearly compliments the Firetex range!
Whether you're an Architect, Specifier, Engineer or Applicator, Firetex FX5002 has something for everyone! The loadings are fantastic, it dries quickly, conforms to standards, is in line with recommendations and application is simple.
A quick and easy intumescent coating
The low loadings combined with a high solids content means FX5002 gives 60 minutes fire protection in just one spray coat.
* Just one coat is enough to fire protect all standard rolled 3 sided beams and most standard rolled columns when applied by airless spray (it can also be brush applied). In turn, the low film thicknesses speed up the drying process which is becoming more popular as construction time is of the essence!
Application
Whilst all the above is important, you may be wondering about the practical aspects. Designed to be sprayed through a petrol pump (don't forget it can also be brush applied!), FX5002 fire protection coating has excellent reviews from painting contractors:
- great spray pattern
- good sag tolerance
- no runs and gives a smooth finish
- doesn't finger
- no cracking
- it holds up in 1 coat for all thicknesses
These excellent spray characteristics allow applicators to achieve good aesthetic finishes, so there's no need for a topcoat when applied in a C1 environment; but we also observed the need for coloured finish coats. FX5002 was developed so that Leighs water based and solvent based topcoats are suitable, giving you a choice of BS and RAL shades for decorative purposes!
Testing
In October 2007 further fire testing took place to reduce the coating thickness on cellular beams. This testing brings FX5002 in line with the new ASFP (Association for Specialist Fire Protection) test protocol - which will be included in the 4th edition of the ASFP Publication 'Fire Protection for Structural Steel in Buildings' (also known as the "Yellow Book").
FX5002 has been assessed in accordance with ICF (Intumescent Coatings Forum) recommendations, applying the new industry standard: ‘Criteria of Acceptability’ (ASTM D2697-86(1998)). In addition, FX5002 has been tested to ENV 13381-4 as well as BS476 Part 21 and has independent, third party approval by Certifire.
Developed as a water based intumescent, FX5002 is free from health and safety issues and is also environmentally friendly. Formulated to satisfy the EC Solvent Emissions Directive and free from TCEP (a known carcinogen), contractors can use the material and feel at ease as it reduces the risk of applicators coming into contact with (potentially) harmful substances.
So whether you're involved in a new build or refurbishment project, think FX5002.
