Fire Protecting Terminal 5

Terminal 5 Heathrow has been the largest construction task in Europe and Leighs Paints has been lucky enough to be involved in this prestigious project.

Some facts about the newest edition to the busiest airport in the world:

  • The main terminal building alone has enough room inside to house 50 football pitches
  • Over 80,000 tones of steel was used during construction
  • Aproximately 1.5 million litres of paint, including fire protection and corrosion prevention coatings have been used
  • It has taken 5 years to build

This project has been completed on time and on budget, helped by the taking painting off the critical path through offsite coating of steelwork.

Stevan Brown, Design Leader, BAA had this to say:

'The paint systems provided by Leighs were an unsung but essential part of T5, providing fire and weather protection to the steel frames during construction and in the final building. The intumescent coatings were particularly impressive, infinitely superior to sprayed or board-based systems, and proved surprisingly robust in construction, requiring relatively little making good of the sections, which were pre-coated and cured off site.'
