The Boat the Boys and Business Built |

The Ketch project, known to the boys of Bolton School as the “Millennium Boat” (pictured below), has finally been completed and is set to undergo rigorous sea trials at Glassdon Dock in Lancashire. After 9 years of intensive planning and construction, and after the hard work of approximately 1000 pupils, the 48 ft offshore sailing ketch is near to becoming fully operational in the Clyde and West Coast of Scotland. Taking Bolton School pupils on leadership and sail training courses, the boat (yet to be named) is protected by Leighs Paints marine protective coatings, hence shielding the hull and deck areas, Bolton School were more than pleased. Mr Mike Whitmarsh, project coordinator and former head of Bolton School’s technology department, believes that the contribution from firms like Leighs was invaluable: “The school is indebted to local businesses who have helped to supply components, labour and expertise.”Able to accommodate 12 people, the boat also has a wet room with two shower heads, twin gimballed ovens and the food is stored in the galley’s fridge and deep freeze. |
