PRESS RELEASE

7th November 2007
On the 6th November the Queen opened the refurbished St Pancras station, now dubbed St Pancras International. Over 10 years St Pancras has been transformed into a sparkling new transport hub to Europe and the UK. Part of the look of the new station has been achieved by using specialist coatings provided by Leighs Paints.

Barlow shed roof, the Victorian train shed, now the home of the Euro Star, has been stripped back to the original ironwork and finished with an acrylic urethane sheen finish which was produced to match the exact shade of blue used when the shed was first completed in 1868. The pale blue shade was originally conceived as a way of making the ironwork melt into the sky and the paint and colour were approved by English Heritage.

Elsewhere in the station the undercroft, which is now home to a mall and the longest champagne bar in Europe, is protected by Firetex intumescent coatings, which will protect the new steelwork in the event of a fire, which has been approved by the London Fire Brigade.

St Pancras is London’s main rail connection to the Midlands and south Yorkshire, a new train shed was constructed in steel to house the existing domestic connections. Yet again Leighs Paints coatings were chosen to coat this new structure with a specification designed to provide long term protection to the building.

Leighs Paints have helped to bring a cathedral of the steam age back to its former glory, as well as providing protection for the modern structures now associated with this Victorian classic.
