Applying passive fire protection coatings at steelwork contactors premises (referred to as painting in-house, in-shop or off-site) has a whole host of benefits, including:
- Saving money - the end client has a building delivered faster due to a reduction of the coating time on the critical path
- A healthier site – little or no painting on site means less mess and exposure to chemicals
- High standard of finish – ease of access in controlled conditions results in more consistent standards of application
- Speed – an intumescent coating system (including primer and topcoat) can be completed in 2 days, including drying time
Leighs Paints has pioneered the use of intumescent coatings being applied in-shop. Working closely with our customers we have developed a range of coatings that are ideally suited to in shop application due to their fast drying times and consistency of application.

More buildings suffer from fire during construction than after completion.
It makes sense, therefore, to protect a structure when it is most needed. When steel is delivered with the passive fire protection already fixed, that structure is protected immediately. We have anecdotal evidence of the value of this approach following fire incidents, which have occurred during the construction phase, where Firetex prevented collapse of the steelwork.
Leighs Paints supplies a complete coating solution for application offsite, with both primers and topcoats to provide either a decorative or functional finish.
