A road marking paint invented by a Bolton firm has scooped an award.

NiteSite, produced by Bolton manufacturer Leighs Paints won the 'Road Safety Product of the Year' award at the 2007 Highways Magazine excellence awards.

The paint aims to cut accidents in dark and wet conditions. Its unique rippled surface sheds standing water, while reflective beads shine light from the coating back at the driver.

Leighs Paints, based in Kestor Street, claims nine times more light in relected compared to standard road paint.

It has been backed by the AA, and Cheshire County Council has been using it for four years on the A556 near Chester, where accidents have been cut by more than 50 per cent.

the panel of judges, which included Highways Agency officials and council representatives, said the product had 'clearly demonstrated its potential across the UK'.

Paul Clayton, marketing director at Leighs Paints, said:
'Hard evidence proves that using NiteSite saves lives. Anybody using the roads at this time of year should try to see the white lines and recognise that when it's dark and wet you just can't see them.

Winning this award gives NiteSite the recognition it deserves.'
